Re-Elect Melissa De Genova for Vancouver City Council

Building a Family Friendly Vancouver

October 20, 2018

Melissa De Genova. Building a Vancouver for Tomorrow.

Elected in 2014, Councillor Melissa De Genova has a long history of community and public service. She previously served as a Non-Partisan Association (NPA) Park Board commissioner from 2011–2014 and developed a passion for civic issues at a very young age. Councillor De Genova chose to run for City Council with the NPA for many reasons, including, adding the voice of a millennial to Vancouver government and to bring her experience in housing to create affordable and realistic housing solutions in our city, in light of the Vancouver’s housing crisis.

Building a Family Friendly Vancouver.

Housing Affordability

The right supply of housing includes rental housing and home ownership. Micro-suites, co-housing, town houses, multi-family units and single family homes- all have a place in our city.  Housing needs to be attainable for everyone, including families and seniors. A city wide plan will help Vancouver to achieve the right supply of housing and respect the 22 unique neighbourhoods in our city. Locating housing near amenities such as child care, community centres, green space and transit is essential to building a family friendly city.

Child Care

Increasing safe and affordable child care spaces in all Vancouver neighbourhoods is essential for families with young children.  The City of Vancouver needs to encourage stakeholders to build childcare by creating incentives. The red tape, lengthy processes and high fees involved with building licensed childcare facilities can deter developers. Vancouver needs to take leadership and streamline the development and license processes. Families living in Vancouver deserve safe, licensed and affordable childcare.

Public Consultation & Engagement

Meaningful consultation and opportunities for public input that reaches beyond the walls of City Hall. Civic government needs to understand that “one size fits all” does not fit all of Vancouver’s 22 unique neighbourhoods. New strategies and ways to engage with families, working professionals and residents who face barriers that may not allow them to attend open houses and public hearings. There is a place for theatre in our city, and consultation is not it. Our city needs transparent public processes and to accept and value public input.
